AC Capacitor Replacement - San Jose

This is the most common AC failure I see, by a wide margin. Bay Area summers are mild, but capacitors die on heat and age, and plenty of San Jose units are past fifteen years.

What it usually turns out to be

  • Hum, then nothing

    $150 to $300

The compressor is trying to start without enough kick. Classic weak capacitor.

  • Outdoor fan will not spin on its own

    $150 to $300

If a nudge starts it, the capacitor is gone. Do not keep running it that way, you will cook the motor.

  • Bulging or leaking top

    $150 to $300

A domed or weeping capacitor is finished. No diagnosis needed.

A cylindrical run capacitor mounted inside an open condenser access panel, wired to the contactor beside it.

Want a read on it before anyone drives out?

Call and describe what it is doing. Most of the time that is enough to narrow it down and give you a range.
