AC Will Not Turn On - San Jose
Dead silence when you drop the thermostat usually means power is not reaching the unit. Half these calls are something you can check yourself in two minutes.
What it usually turns out to be
Tripped breaker or blown fuse
$150 to
$350 Free to check. If it trips again right away, stop resetting it and call. Something is drawing too much current.
Burned contactor
$150 to
$350 The relay that feeds the outdoor unit pits and welds itself over time. Common around the ten year mark.
Full condensate pan, float switch open
$89 to
$180 A safety switch cuts the system when the drain backs up. It is doing its job. Clear the drain and it comes back.
Dead thermostat
$150 to
$450 Batteries, or a failed unit. Cheap either way, and worth ruling out first.

Check this before you call
- Check the breaker panel. Also check the disconnect box on the wall by the outdoor unit.
- Thermostat screen blank? Try fresh batteries before anything else.
- Look for water around the indoor unit. A backed-up drain trips the safety switch.
