AC Running But Not Cooling - San Jose
If the fan runs but the air is warm, do not book a $2,000 repair from a panic Google search. Nine times out of ten it is one of three things. Two of them are cheap.
What it usually turns out to be
Dead capacitor
$150 to
$300 The compressor tries to start and cannot. You often hear a hum, then nothing. Twenty minute swap.
Clogged filter, frozen coil
$89 to
$180 Airflow drops, the indoor coil ices over, and the air comes out warm. Shut it off and let it thaw before we arrive.
Low refrigerant
$400 to
$1,200 Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, there is a leak. Anyone who tops it off without finding the leak is taking your money.

Check this before you call
- Check the filter first. If it is grey and matted, that is your suspect.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Fan spinning? Ice on the copper lines?
- Turn the system off at the thermostat if you see ice. Running it frozen damages the compressor.
