Trane AC Repair in San Jose

Trane units tend to outlive their own controls. On the systems I see here the compressor is often fine while the board, the sensors or the capacitor have gone - which is good news, because those are the cheap end.

We are not an authorized Trane dealer and are not affiliated with Trane.

Shared parts, and why it matters

Trane and the American Standard brand of heating and cooling equipment come from the same parent, and a great deal of the hardware is shared. If you own one, parts for the other are often interchangeable.

Common Trane failures

  • Control board failure

    $150 to $450

More common on Trane than the capacitor-first pattern of other brands. Often diagnosable before we drive out if you can read me the fault light pattern.

  • Capacitor failure

    $150 to $300

Still the most frequent single part, as on every brand.

  • Blower motor module

    $450 to $900

On older variable-speed units the control module fails more often than the motor itself, which is the cheaper half.

Trane parts and lead times

Good availability locally. Control boards for older variable-speed models are the one item that can take a few days.

Trane questions

My Trane is flashing a light on the outdoor unit. What does that mean?

It is a fault code. Count the flashes and the pauses and read them to me on the phone - on Trane equipment that usually narrows it to one or two components before anyone drives out.

Is a Trane worth repairing at 15 years?

More often than most brands, yes. The compressors last. If the failure is a board, a capacitor or a motor module rather than the compressor itself, repair is usually the better deal.

Why is the control board more expensive than the capacitor?

It is a electronics assembly rather than a single component, and on older variable-speed models it is model-specific. That is also why it can take a few days to source.

Trane unit down right now?

Count the flashes on the outdoor unit and read them to me. On Trane equipment that fault code usually names the component before anyone drives out.
