What moves the number
Number of zones
This is almost the whole price. Each indoor head is its own line set, its own mount, its own condensate route. Two zones is not twice the work of one, but it is close.
Distance from the outdoor unit
Line-set length drives both material and labor. A head on the far side of the house from the condenser costs meaningfully more than one on the same wall.
Electrical
Mini-splits want a dedicated circuit. In a 1960s Cambrian ranch on an original 100A panel, that can mean a panel conversation before a mini-split conversation.
Condensate routing
Gravity drain where possible, a condensate pump where not. Pumps are the number one mini-split service call later, so where the drain goes matters more than it sounds.
Brand and parts availability
Off-brand units bought online are cheaper upfront and can be unserviceable within a few years. We will tell you before installation, not after.

Questions about this cost
Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?
Yes. Every modern mini-split is a heat pump, and in this climate it will heat a converted garage or ADU perfectly well. That is often the real reason to choose one.
Do they need a permit?
Yes, for installation. We pull it with the City of San Jose.
How long does the install take?
One zone is typically a single day. Three or four zones is two to three days.
Can I install one myself?
The pre-charged DIY kits exist. The refrigerant work, the electrical circuit and the permit are the parts that go wrong, and a bad flare joint leaks out over a season.
